What Is a Trace Moisture Tester?

When I first came into contact with transformer oil detection work, I had no concept of the term 'trace moisture' - what's the big deal with having some water in transformer oil? Later on, I realized that even a few tens of ppm of moisture in transformer insulation oil could cause a significant decrease in insulation performance, leading to serious insulation breakdown accidents. That's why trace moisture testing is a mandatory item for preventive testing of transformers.

What is a trace moisture tester

A trace moisture analyzer is a precision analytical instrument used to measure extremely small amounts of moisture content in liquid, solid, or gas samples. The word 'trace' is not an exaggeration - HZWS-X2 has a resolution of 0.1 µ g, which is 0.1 millionth of a gram, and can detect trace amounts of water that are completely invisible to the naked eye.

What principle is used

The mainstream method is Karl Fischer Coulometry, which complies with the national standard GB7600. The principle is not complicated: the water in the sample undergoes a quantitative chemical reaction with iodine in the electrolyte, and the amount of electricity consumed corresponds to the amount of water - according to Faraday's law of electrolysis, W=Q/10.722, The quantity of electricity Q (millicoulombs) divided by 10.722 is the mass of water (micrograms). This method has high accuracy and low testing cost, and is currently internationally recognized as the benchmark method for measuring trace moisture.

What are the main tests in the power industry

Transformer insulation oil is the most common object of detection. Excessive moisture content in insulation oil can reduce breakdown voltage and accelerate the aging of insulation paper, which is one of the main causes of transformer faults. In addition, there are various types of insulation oils such as circuit breaker arc extinguishing oil, transformer oil, capacitor oil, as well as moisture detection in solid insulation materials, which are widely used in the petroleum, chemical, pharmaceutical, and food industries.

Determine what unit it is

The results are usually expressed in ppm (parts per million by mass) or mg/L (milligrams per liter). HZWS-X2 provides three calculation formulas that can automatically convert based on the density, volume, or mass of the input sample, without the need for manual calculation of moisture content.
